“ARE WE CLEAR?” Rose asked.

Peter checked the mirrors again. “Yes. Good driving.”

“LA standard,” she said, hugging the wheel, her face as white as printer paper. He’d navigated them on local roads to 395 North, and now they were speeding along the interstate.

“Where do I go?”

“Exit up there.” He pointed to the left, toward a seemingly endless limestone facade.

“The Pentagon?”

“Pull in the south lot. It should be open. It’s the safest place I can think of.”

She turned onto Rotary Road, and then crawled through the empty lots surrounded by Jersey barriers. Guard booths stood between them and the Metro entrance.

“There.” He pointed to a spot halfway across the parking area.

Rose pulled into the space and put the car in park. She held the wheel with both hands and let her head fall forward.

Peter put his hand on her back. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes. I didn’t get hurt, but I feel a little sick.”

“You want some air? Walk around?”

“I’ll be fine.” She looked at her hands, opened and closed them. “I can’t stop shaking, but—Jesus, Peter! Your neck.”

He touched the fabric at his neck, then looked at his fingers. Less blood now. It stung like venom but he was so relieved to be alive he didn’t care.

“It doesn’t feel too bad.”

Rose hissed as she helped him open his collar and looked at the wound. Peter checked the glove box and pulled out a pack of tissues, then dabbed along the cut. It burned but he could move his head fine. He pulled out a fresh tissue and pressed it down on his neck. “It’ll be all right,” he said.

She rested one hand on the wheel. “Back at the house . . . was she . . . dead?”

“Yes.”

Rose shut her eyes. “God. Do you believe what she said? About calling Farr? Do you think Farr sent that car to kill her?”

Peter fought to stay calm, to order his thoughts. Krysanova called the emergency line and talked to Farr. Farr definitely sent that car. The driver used the safe signal that Farr provided. And whoever was in that car killed Krysanova.

He turned to Rose. “She must have.”

She held the back of her hand to her mouth and looked out the window.

Peter sat back. A wave of nausea ran through him. Now he finally understood why every call on that line went eyes only to Farr and Hawkins.

“She’s using the emergency line to find anyone who knows about what’s really happening,” he said. “Your aunt and uncle gave that number to the people who were helping them find the truth.”

“And so she killed them? She had my aunt and uncle murdered?”

It was hard to conceive, but Peter had seen it before, the scandal that took down his father, betrayal at the highest level.

“I think so,” he said. His stomach tightened. He had played a part in Farr’s crimes. He remembered all those endless hours, remembered the first time the emergency line had rung, months ago, remembered the urgency in the caller’s voice. Was that another source? Another witness? He had delivered that person straight to Farr.
